The Avocat San Frontieres France (ASFF) also known as Lawyers Without Borders recently secured the release of three inmates detained in various prisons in Benue and Kaduna States. The inmates, Mr Joshua Aju, Mr. Tyonenge Jemjem and Mohammed Haruna, were detained between April 2012 and February 26 2013 without trial.
According to a statement from ASFF, Makurdi High Court and Magistrate Court Kaduna ordered the release of Aju, Jemjem and Mohammed respectively following its fundamental human rights application. The application is based on Section 35 (4) of the 1999 constitution.
Aju is being held for an undisclosed offence; Jemjem was arrested and detained when his brother suspected of armed robbery could not be found while Mohammed was held for allegedly receiving stolen property.
ASFF lawyers proved that the Police lacked evidence to substantiate the allegations against the inmates.
ASFF’s Saving Lives project has embarked on free human rights interventions in the country.
